A resource library about human population pressures on the environment.

Welcome

Welcome to The Crowded Planet resource library.

The impacts of human population growth on wildlife and the environment are discussed in research, reports, commentaries and other resources across various fields, including ecology, conservation, demography, psychology and policy. By bringing them all together in one place, we can better understand the wide-ranging effects of human population pressure as well as the solutions that can benefit endangered species, human rights and the health of communities and the planet.

You can view the complete list or choose from the categories below. Click on each category to see its individual list of resources.

Within the categories, we’ve provided summaries for each article to give a quick preview of what the research is on and what the key takeaways are. These are not intended to be comprehensive summaries of the research or a replacement for reading articles in their entirety. We specifically focus on, and highlight, aspects relevant to population.

The Issue

Unchecked human population growth and consumption are key drivers of the current threats facing wildlife and wild spaces. Understanding the evidence-backed consequences of human population growth and the barriers to working on this issue is important for developing and prioritizing solutions.

Barriers

Difficulties arise in working on population issues beyond those that are inherent in any complex problem. From denial that the problem exists to cultural norms that make discussing it taboo to systemic racial and gender inequity and historical injustices that have caused distrust, it’s important to understand these concerns and correct inaccuracies in order to move forward.

Effective Solutions

Human population pressure is about more than just numbers — it’s about the people who share this planet and the complex dynamics of diverse cultures, politics, lifestyles and relationships with the environment. Effective solutions must be equitable and grounded in human rights like improved access to education and voluntary family planning.
